If there is one tradition that is deeply rooted in our collective memory, this has to be the festival of Sinterklaas. Poems, surprises, gifts, sweets and songs – these evoke certain feelings in all of us. After all, Sinterklaas Eve tops the list of the 100 favourite traditions compiled by the Dutch Centre for Popular Culture. And yet the Sinterklaas celebration means different things to different people. The tradition and its significance are largely shaped by personal circumstances and by the spirit of the times.

Different Sinterklaas traditions are on display in the painting gallery, one floor down. Here in this room you will find Sinterklaas poems from World War II. They show how Sinterklaas Eve was celebrated even in difficult times.
